I thought ATLA was about multi ethnicity

Fri Mar 20, 2009, 6:41 PM
One of the main things I realy like about Avatar the Last Airbender is the fact that it's underlying message often deals with acceptance and multiculturism, but appearantly not according to the new casting. When I got a peak at the cast of the movie's leading roles I was realy disapointed, it's like nazi Germany. All the main roles are being played by white actors and actoresses, and considering the strong Inuit impression that Sokka and Katara gave off, it kinda seems wrong. the fact is that in the series each nation, weather fire, water, air, or earth, had a distict quality and individual characteristic reflecting some of the ethnicties that exist either today or in the past. The all white cast takes away from that greatly.

Think about what this is telling the younge viewers of the show, who are probly not even concience of what ethinicity the actors are. They are probly going to go and watch the film because it's ATLA, they're not going to think about the underlying messages, those they just pic up subconciesly from watching the show. But what does it subconciensly tell them when the actors are all white, and the back ups and filler characters are of diffrent ethinicity? It basicly tells them that the protaganist is suposed to be white. This seems an obvious observation that can be made, not a far stretch realy? so then why is it allowed, in this day and age where every celeberty and their dog is preaching tollerance and eqality, that a major film influetial on youth would have such a blantantly sinister underlying message? Well the answer is obvious, because these youge white actors are extremely marketable. and so for the sake of money in their pockets film producers allow such immoralities.

Basicaly as a female white Canadian it apalls me, I was realy hoping we were moving past all this, were the protaganist is american and the antagonest is always of a diffrent ethinicity.

If you feel that the casting is unfair, then please sign this petition: [link]
